The Domino Effect of Organization: Transforming Your Home One Space at a Time
If you find joy in the meticulous arrangement of spaces and have an interest in professional organization and interior design, you’re in the right place. In our dynamic world, where every detail matters, we understand the significance of a well-organized and aesthetically pleasing home. It can be daunting to think about each area of your home that needs a little TLC, but we highly recommend starting with one small project, which will spark inspiration to do more.
The Domino Effect of Organization
Have you ever experienced the domino effect of organization? It’s a journey that begins with a single step—perhaps a step into a cluttered closet. Opening the door to chaos can lead to a transformational process that not only rearranges your belongings but also has a profound impact on the entire ambiance of your home. It’s like a ripple effect (or a domino effect), spreading order and beauty from one corner to another.
We’ve all been there—stashing items in random places, creating an unintentional disarray that clouds the true potential of our living spaces. However, once you decide to tackle that first closet, something magical happens. The desire for order becomes contagious, prompting you to venture into other areas of your home. Suddenly, it’s not just about organizing a closet; it’s about reviving the essence of every room, making each space not only functional, but also visually pleasing.
Shawn’s Organization Journey
Let’s dive in and explore our founder Shawn’s journey through her home in Wrentham, MA. While Shawn is undeniably skilled in the design realm, organizing hasn’t always been her forte. Yet, as she navigated through various spaces in her home, one at a time, a contagious wave of effort emerged. Now, even her husband is actively involved, spotting items seeking a designated home and gently encouraging adherence to the newly established organizational system. Together, they’re transforming their living spaces, turning what was once a challenge into a collaborative and inspiring endeavor.
Starting with the Entryway Closet
When Kayla and Shawn started working together, Shawn wanted to experience the organizing process firsthand. They decided to start small with her entryway closet, a four-foot space that was underutilized. Kayla designed and installed a custom system, making the most of the vertical space and organizing everything to fit perfectly. This project became the foundation of Shawn’s journey into professional organization.
Inspired to Do More
After seeing how well the entryway system worked, Shawn was inspired to tackle other areas of her home (this has happened with multiple clients of ours)! She began ordering solutions like drawer organizers for her kitchen’s junk drawer and airtight containers for her baking supplies. Kayla and Shawn collaborated on additional projects, including using over-the-door racks to organize items like laundry essentials and wrapping paper. Each small success built momentum, showing how one organized space can inspire transformation throughout the home.
A Surprise Success
Shawn’s husband was initially skeptical about the process but became fully on board after seeing the results. Now, he actively participates in maintaining their systems and even points out items that need a designated home. This collaboration has been key to keeping their spaces organized and functional.
A personal reflection from Shawn:
I must admit I always thought professional organization was a “nice to have” item in your home. I had hired a pro years ago when we renovated our last home to include a designated office for my husband who holds on to every receipt and manual. We found that the systems she put in place for us were easy to follow and maintain.
Fast forward to 2019, when we downsized to live on the lake, we needed organization more than ever. My initial plan was to get rid of anything that didn’t fit, didn’t work in the space, or wasn’t needed. I became a space fanatic, the likes of which would make Marie Kondo shudder. A gentler approach would have produced less tears… downsizing and decluttering is emotional. I treated it more like a battle that had to be won.
When Kayla and I started DOG Co., I knew it would be important for me to experience at least a little of what she was doing for our clients; so, we started with the entry closet… all four feet of it.
My husband did not have any expectations but was very excited when he saw how much we could fit in that first space. Seeing is believing and can we talk about labeling everything? We have realized that this is the key to maintaining the system. There is a lot less “Honey where is the (fill in the blank)?” People have always told me my design business saved their marriage; professional organization is saving mine! 😊
The Transformative Power of Organizing
Decluttering isn’t just about making spaces look neat; it’s about creating an environment that radiates calm, order, and style. There’s a psychology behind the act of tidying up—it can reduce stress, boost productivity, and even improve relationships as you collaborate on shared spaces.
From the entryway to the master closet, Shawn’s story shows how a single step can create a domino effect throughout the home. By starting small, embracing the process, and working together, it’s possible to create a home that feels cohesive, functional, and uniquely yours.
