At Design Organize Gather Co., we refer to the decluttering process as “editing.” It’s not just about what goes and what stays — it’s about creating space for the life you want to live. And while a tidy room might be the visual result, the journey to get there is often emotional, personal, and surprisingly powerful.
As professional organizers, we’ve guided many clients through this process and learned one important truth: decluttering is never just about the clutter. It’s about what the clutter represents — memories, identity, grief, guilt, fear, and hope.
Common Emotions During the Editing Process
Overwhelm
The sheer volume of items to sort through can feel paralyzing. Many clients don’t know where to start — or fear they won’t be able to finish.
How we help: The good news is that we always know where to start. We break the process into small, manageable chunks. A focused 25-minute work session followed by a 5-minute break keeps things sustainable. Four rounds in, we’ll stretch, grab some water, and reassess. We tackle clutter in one category at a time. One shelf. One drawer. By the end of the session, clients are often surprised at how much progress they were able to make.
Sentimentality
Items often hold memories, making it difficult to let go. A child’s drawing. A gift from a loved one. A dress that reminds you of your former self.
How we help: We honor those feelings and help you decide how to move forward. Sometimes it’s enough to take a photo of an item. Other times, we hold space for the memory before deciding to let the item go. Letting go doesn’t mean forgetting, but sometimes it no longer fits with who you are in the present.
Guilt
It’s common to feel guilt — about unused gifts, money spent, or perfectly good things that are no longer needed.
How we help: We gently remind our clients that the value of an item isn’t in keeping it — it’s in the joy it once brought. Donating unused items allows them to fulfill a new purpose elsewhere, in someone else’s hands. Having that item take up space in your home doesn’t get you your money back, it only takes up your time because now you have to manage it (cleaning it, storing it, organizing it, etc.) Keeping items out of guilt only contributes to your mental load.
Indecision
“I might need it someday.” “What if I regret it?” These thoughts can keep people stuck.
How we help: We introduce tools like a “maybe” box, where clients can temporarily place items they’re unsure about and revisit them later. We also pre-sort categories (shirts with shirts, pants with pants) so clients can make faster and more confident choices. If there’s an indecision on a low-cost item, we remind clients that it would be very easy to get that item again if it was ever needed.
Relief and Empowerment
As clutter clears, many clients feel a lightness — not just in their home, but in their mind. Decision-making becomes easier. Confidence builds.
How we help: We celebrate every win. Even one drawer cleared is progress. We reflect back what’s working and highlight how far they’ve come.
Why Decluttering Can Be Emotionally Intense
Editing often brings up deeply personal emotions. Understanding what’s beneath the clutter helps us approach every session with compassion and grace.
- Loss of Control: Life transitions — caregiving, illness, divorce — often leave homes in disarray. Editing can trigger those memories and emotions.
- Identity and Memory: Letting go of certain items can feel like letting go of a former self, a dream, or a time in life that held meaning.
- Fear of Scarcity: “What if I need it later?” This fear stems from anxiety or past experiences of not having enough.
- Shame: Clients may feel embarrassed that they “let things get this bad.” Simply letting us into their home feels vulnerable.
We’ve seen clients cry. We’ve seen them laugh. We’ve witnessed frustration, avoidance, and incredible moments of courage. All of it is valid. All of it is part of the process. And we’re there to do it with you!
How We Support Clients
Our team is trained not only in systems and structure, but in empathy. Here’s what you can expect from us:
- Compassionate Language: You won’t hear “should” or judgment. You will hear encouragement, reassurance, and the reminder that this process is brave.
- Structured Sessions: We use proven methods to keep things manageable — including built-in breaks and mental resets when needed.
- Mental Clarity First: If a client is overwhelmed before we even begin, we’ll pause to help clear their mental clutter with a quick “brain dump” exercise. You can’t organize your space if your mind feels chaotic.
- Tailored Pacing: Some clients move fast. Some need more time. We meet them where they are.
You Don’t Have to Do It All at Once
One of the biggest misconceptions about organizing is that you have to do everything at once. That’s not how real change happens.
We offer a menu of services so you can start where it makes the most sense:
- Phase 1: Declutter and organize
- Phase 2: Design and renovate
- Phase 3: Decorate and organize your newly updated space
Whether you’re refreshing a single room or transforming your entire home, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
One Last Thing...
Editing is about so much more than your belongings. It’s about rewriting the story you tell yourself — about who you are, what you deserve, and what you’re ready to let go of.
This is sacred work. And it’s our honor to walk through it with you.
